We begin our Advent Series looking at the first title in Isaiah's prophecy in 9:6. Jesus is predicted to be the perfect king who will be a "wonderful counselor". But what does that mean? How did he fulfill that? We explore the New Testament to find the answers to those questions in this mornings message.

God raises up prophets like Elijah, not as fortune-tellers but rather as key messengers to confront and encourage his people. In this part one, we see how Elijah's life demonstrated how God powerfully provides like no one and nothing else.

Israel and Judah's apostasy and rebellion continue to worsen. Their history that's recorded in 1 Kings 14-16 is littered with evil kings though occasionally a good one rises up. Overall though, even the good leaders don't totally reform their nations. Half-measures of repentance fail to cure their full-measures of rebellion. And the same is true for us.

Jeroboam was placed in charge of the northern tribes of Israel directly by God. Despite this great opportunity, he squandered it because of his own fears and insecurities. He was dedicated to doing his own thing and that led him and the nation astray. His life exemplifies how disaster always comes to those who are dedicated to depravity.

Solomon's reign began with a roar but ends in a whimper. And yet God will not abandon his people. Dr. Rock LaGioia leads us to discover how God's unconditional promises can't be thwarted by the sins of his people.
