Because sin and evil worsened and progressed, all of their other advancements became meaningless. Prosperity is a tragedy when it comes at the expense of piety.

Israel and Judah's apostasy and rebellion continue to worsen. Their history that's recorded in 1 Kings 14-16 is littered with evil kings though occasionally a good one rises up. Overall though, even the good leaders don't totally reform their nations. Half-measures of repentance fail to cure their full-measures of rebellion. And the same is true for us.
